About The Shoemaker Institute
The Shoemaker Institute is named in honor of Dr. Byrl R. Shoemaker, a pioneering advocate for career-technical education who led the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Career-Technical Education from 1962 to 1982. Upon his passing in March 2012, at the age of 93, the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education established the Shoemaker Institute to honor his legacy and cultivate leadership in CTE.
The Shoemaker Institute now encompasses three distinct professional development pillars:
The Leadership Fellowship is a transformational, cohort-based experience for CTE professionals who want to level up their leadership. Participants deepen their understanding of CTE in Ohio, strengthen their capacity to lead with vision, foster collaboration, and drive meaningful change in their schools, districts, and communities. This program includes state and national experiences and is designed to support both personal and professional growth. New Teacher Professional Development provides foundational training and support for career-technical educators entering the classroom from industry.
